Dr. Kelly Basaldua is a board certified pediatrician who joined Southwest Children’s Center in 2016. She grew up in Arlington, Texas and earned her undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from St. Mary’s University in 2006. While at St. Mary’s, she was a member of the Division II Women’s Soccer Team and served as its team captain her junior year. Dr. Basaldua then received her medical degree from UT Health Science Center of San Antonio in 2010 and went on to complete her pediatric residency at the UTHSCSA Department of Pediatrics in 2013.
After completing her education and training, Dr. Basaldua spent time as a Pediatric Hospitalist and Sedationist at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio from 2013-2016. She also served as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics while at CHofSA and helped teach many pediatric residents.
Dr. Basaldua and her husband, Paul Basaldua, have been married since 2010. They have three beautiful children Julian, Raquel, and Marco. Dr. Basaldua is fluent in Spanish and welcomes patients from all over Texas.
Dr. Wilson Wayne Grant has been associated with Southwest Children’s Center since 1980 until his retirement in August 2014. He is a graduate of Howard Payne University where he graduated with honors. His medical, pediatric and child development training was completed at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, Texas. For ten years, he practiced pediatrics and child development in El Paso, Texas where he served on the faculty of the Texas Tech School of Medicine.
In 1980, he moved to San Antonio, Texas and joined Southwest Children’s Center. In addition, Dr. Grant served for 25 years as the Health Services Director for the Rio Grande River Ministry–a service and outreach program ministering to the border communities of Texas and Mexico. He also was a member of the clinical teaching faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center for many years.
He is married to Veronica and has two children and four grandchildren.
Dr. Lewis Purnell was a board certified pediatrician who worked with Southwest Children’s Center from 1986 until his death in 2011. He grew up in Chicago, IL and moved to San Antonio as an 8th grader with his family. Dr. Purnell graduated from Marshall High School. He attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, TX and graduated with a BS in Biology and a BA in Chemistry. Dr. Purnell attended Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX. He graduated in 1982, the day before marrying his wife Debra.
They moved to Oklahoma City, OK where Dr. Purnell completed his pediatric internship and residency. He was one of two chief residents his final year of training. The family moved back to San Antonio in 1986, when Dr. Purnell joined Southwest Children’s Center. He was the first Chief of Staff for Methodist Children’s Hospital in 1999.
He and his wife have 3 children. Dr. Purnell enjoyed time with his family and travel.
